On Sunday night, Union Board announced via Instagram comedian Mo Amer would be headlining the 2022 Big Show performance. Opening for the performance is comedian Zainab Johnson.
Amer is best known for his Netflix comedy specials: “Mo Amer: The Vagabond,” which premiered in 2018, and “Mo Amer: Mohammed in Texas,” which premiered in 2021. Additionally, Amer plays the cousin of the titular character in the ongoing Hulu sit-com, “Ramy.”
He is also set to play an undisclosed character in “Black Adam,” a DC Comics superhero film starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to premiere in October. Johnson also filmed an introduction for Amer’s “Mohammed in Texas” special.
Amer will headline the first Big Show performance since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Union Board’s decision to host a comedian for the performance is partially due to tradition and partially to ease back into producing the event, according to Director of Campus Life, Jennifer Yawson.
“We typically do music, comedy, music, comedy, and our last one was music,” said Yawson. “But it’s also a little bit easier of a show to produce than a music show and for our first one out of the gate, it just made sense to do that kind of show.”
Bidding for comedian performances started around Spring Break of this semester. With Amer as the performer, Yawson and Union Board hope to have found someone who both fits the comedy style campus enjoys, and is also on the rise in recognition.
“We’ve had great luck in the past getting people right before they break and it’s exciting to have them here on campus and continue to see them grow as artists,” said Yawson. “We’re hoping students have the same experience with Mo.”
The 2022 Big Show will be April 18 at 9 p.m. in Goodrich Chapel. Doors will open at 8:30 p.m.
