Women’s Volleyball
The women’s volleyball team was busy this past week with three games in five days. On Tuesday, Sept. 22, the team traveled to Calvin College; Calvin was undefeated going into their match with the Brits. That wouldn’t change as Calvin swept Albion in three sets. Caledonia, Mich. junior Stephanie Thurner led the team with ten kills, and Milford, Mich. senior Kristin Yeager led the team with 14 digs.
The Brits hosted Trine University on Friday, Sept. 25, in what ended up being a lengthy battle between the two teams. While Albion took the first two sets (25-19, 25-13), Trine would not go quietly. Trine was able to win the next two sets (19-25, 24-26) and send the game to the fifth and final set. However, the Brits were able to pull through and take the last set 15-9 and improve their record to 11-4. Milford, Mich. first year Monica Shuk had a team-high 19 digs and Vicksburg, Mich. freshman Taylor Rosenthal led the team with 13 kills.
In their final match of the week, the Brits traveled to Adrian College on Saturday, Sept. 26. The MIAA rivals went back and forth for four sets, but Adrian secured the victory with a five point scoring run in the final set. Thurner collected 18 kills while Shuk had 17 digs.
Looking to improve their record to 3-4 in conference, the team will travel to Saint Mary’s College (Ind.) on Wednesday, Sept. 30.
Women’s Soccer
On Saturday, Sept. 26, the Brits traveled to Olivet College looking to improve their MIAA record to 4-2. Early on in the first half, Olivet’s Emma Essen scored, but Canton, Mich. junior Domenique Sarnecky evened it up for the Brits about ten minutes later. That concluded the scoring for the Brits, but Olivet was able to score twice more and defeat Albion 3-1. Sarnecky was credited with three shots, while Rochester, Mich. junior goalkeeper Cameron Schmidt had six saves.
The next match for the Brits is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 29, when they will host Kalamazoo College. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Men’s Soccer
The Brits didn’t have to travel far this week as they hosted Olivet College on Tuesday, Sept. 22, and Trine University on Saturday, Sept. 26.
On Sept. 22, Albion got off to a quick start with Shelby Township, Mich. first-year freshman Joey Zaremski’s first collegiate goal. Two more goals in the second half from Livonia senior Evan Schweizer and Commerce Township, Mich. sophomore Kyle Bourlier capped off Albion’s 3-0 victory. Traverse City sophomore goalkeeper Justin Kraft tallied three saves in his second shutout of the season.
Albion hosted Trine University on Sept. 26 which featured a scoreless first half. In the second half, however, Trine’s Bucky Carpenter was able to put one past Kraft to lead Trine to a 1-0 victory.
Albion will take a 2-2 conference record to Hope College on Wednesday, Sept. 30, and Alma College on Saturday, Oct 3.
Men’s Golf
In the MIAA jamboree on Monday, Sept. 21, the Brits scored a season-best 313 team score in Kalamazoo, Mich. Albion was edged out by five other schools, with Calvin College finishing first overall. Jackson, Mich. junior Connor Maddalena scored a five over par (76), which led the team in their sixth place finish.
On Saturday, Sept. 26, the story was much of the same for the Brits. Once again, the team score was 313 which was good enough for sixth place. Adrian, Mich. senior Brandon Rincon led the team, shooting five over par (76).
The next MIAA jamboree for the team is Monday, Sept. 28, in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Women’s Golf
The women’s golf team traveled to Marshall, Mich. on Wednesday, Sept. 23 for an MIAA jamboree. Grosse Ile, Mich. first-year Megan Moco shot an 85 to lead Albion as they tied with Alma College for fifth place. The Brits finished with a team score of 357.
On Saturday, Sept. 26, the Brits were in Kalamazoo, Mich. for another MIAA jamboree. The Brits finished seventh with a team score of 356. Novi, Mich. freshman Madison Kroetsch led the team with an 11 over par (83).
The next match for the Brits is an MIAA jamboree hosted by Calvin College on Thursday, Oct. 1.
Men’s Cross Country
On Saturday, Sept. 26, the team traveled to Holland, Mich. for their first MIAA jamboree of the season. The team was able to finish fourth out of the eight teams with a score of 122. Plymouth, Mich. senior Mitch Clinton finished with a time of 25:52, which was only 30 seconds behind the winner of the race, Zachary Nowicki of Calvin College.
The next race for the team will be Saturday, Oct. 17, when they will travel to Winneconne, Wis.
Women’s Cross Country
The women’s cross country team also competed in an MIAA jamboree on Saturday, Sept. 26, where they also finished fourth. They posted a team score of 132. Allegan, Mich. junior Jessica Shaw led Albion with a time of 22:19 which was good enough to finish fifth overall. Dublin, Ohio sophomore Leanne Wegley finished second for the Brits with a time of 23:48.
Along with the men’s team, the women’s cross country team will head to Winneconne, Wis. on Saturday, Oct. 17.
