The Sigma Nu fraternity set a new Albion College philanthropy record during their ninth annual Jessie’s Gift basketball game against Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.
Jessie’s Gift raises money for a mentoring program for Harrington Elementary, an elementary school in Albion. The program matches college students as mentors with local students who need a helping hand. This year’s game raised $15,023 for the charity.
Jessie’s Gift honors Jessie Longhurst, an Albion College student who was killed in an automobile accident while studying abroad in Australia. She was an avid mentor for young students.
Jessie was Sigma Nu’s sweetheart, and since her death, the fraternity hasn’t had another sweetheart.
“It was a great experience,” Brent Heerspink, Cedarville first-year said. “It was amazing to see how much support this charity has and how much good it does.”
Those who attended the basketball game were given complimentary brackets that read “Jessie’s Gift” to remember Jessie and her influence.
“I gained appreciation for what Jessie stood for and how amazing this charity is,” Heerspink said. “It was really satisfying to be a part of something that gives back to the community while improving the life of a child.”
