Brit Bits (9/23-10/5)

Men’s Soccer

Current Record: 4-6 (Conference: 1-3)

Last week: The Britons lost their league opener to Trine (Ind.) 2-1. They followed that up with a 2-0 loss at Olivet.

This week: The Britons opened the week with a 5-1 loss at Adrian, and won a home weekend battle against Alma 1-0.

Key Players: The team was led by Benjamin Patterson, Ann Arbor first-year, who had 4 goals.

What’s next: This week the team will travel to Hope on Oct. 6, and Calvin on Oct. 9.

Football

Current Record: 1-4 (Conference: 0-1)

Last week: Against Wisconsin- Stevens Point, a Division 3 foe from the WIAC, the Britons fell behind 21-0 after one quarter. Although some of the Britons produced record days, they ended up losing 59-14.

This week: In their first MIAA game of 2010 against Kalamazoo, the Brits posted three fumbles, a missed extra point and a missed field goal. Falling behind by as much as ten in the fourth quarter, the Britons tried to rally, but it was not enough as they lost 30-27 to the Hornets.

Key Players: This is a co- award week with quarterback Spencer Krauss, Tipton Junior, who threw for 266 yards against Stevens Point and 233 yards against Kalamazoo. J.C. Cruse, Detroit senior, had 8 catches for 114 yards and a touchdown against Stevens Point, and 5 catches for 129 yards and a touchdown against Kalamazoo.

What’s next: League play continues as the Britons travel to Alma on Oct. 9, and are at home against Hope on Oct. 16.

Cross Country

Current Record: A tie for second and a 20th place finish for the men. A fifth and 31st place finish for the women.

Last week: In a MIAA Jamboree at Olivet, the men’s team placed in a tie for second out of 8 teams, while the women finished 5th out of 9 teams.

This week: At the Sean Earl Invitational in Chicago, the men’s team finished 20th out 41 teams, while the women finished 31st out of 41 teams.

Key Players: Deion Pruitt, Ann Arbor sophomore, and Mitchell Klinger, Coldwater first-year, led the men. Amanda Weaver, Marshall sophomore, and Emily McLaughlin, Gross Pointe senior,  led the women.

What’s next: Both teams will have a Michigan Intercollegiate meet on Oct. 8.

Volleyball

Current Record: 4-14 (Conference: 0-7)

Last Week: The Britons lost three straight league matches at Calvin (3-0), home against Kalamazoo (3-0), and at Alma (3-1).

This Week: The Britons lost at Adrian (3-0), and posted a 1-2 record at a tournament in Illinois over the weekend, as they lost to Illinois Wesleyan, beat Robert Morris, and lost to Augustana.

Key Players: Alexis Brumm, Troy senior, had 14 blocks, 54 kills, and 6 service aces, all to lead the team in the near two week period.

What’s next: The Britons are home on Oct. 9 to take on St. Mary’s (Ind.) and Beloit, Wis. They have an away contest against Hope on Oct. 8.
