The Briton men’s and women’s cross country team saved their best running for the final meet of the regular season on Saturday at Adrian. Both the teams finished in the top 10, with the men finishing third and the women finishing sixth.
“We had our best meet of the year,” said Hayden Smith, head coach.
The men were led by Deion Pruitt, Ann Arbor first-year. Pruitt continued his great season with a time of 27:44.1 and an 11th place finish. The top five for the Albion men was rounded out by Nick Shaheen, Flint senior. Shaheen ran one of his best times of the season with a 28:42.5.
“I was pretty pleased with how I did,” Shaheen said. “Everyone ran well.”
On the women’s side, the leader of the pack was Erika Nichols, Greenville senior. Nichols also ran one of her best races of the year with a time of 25:02.9 and a 28th place finish.
“It went well, and it was extremely emotional, which helped me run faster,” Nichols said.
Katie Broekema, Schoolcraft sophomore, also ran in the top five for the Albion women with a time of 26:52.5.
“All of the women worked really hard, and it helps us stay competitive,” Nichols said.
With the regular season now over, the team’s next focus will be on doing well in the upcoming regional meet.
“The fact that we ran so well at the most important meet of the year gives confidence that we will perform even better in the regional meet,” Smith said.
