Sidewalks renovated around campus

This past week, orange construction cones were visible as sidewalk renovations took place throughout the campus. Fall projects for sidewalk renovations include Mingo Street, Porter Street along Whitehouse Hall, Dean Hall and Burns Street.

“There is no magical formula to determine the need for sidewalk renovation,” said Mark Frever, director of grounds. “If portions of sidewalks appear to be unsafe, the facilities department will make plans for the renovations.”

According to Frever, feedback from students, faculty and staff can help to identify areas that need to be repaired. New renovations also include standards for accessible design determined by the American with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). Costs for the repairs are covered by an annual sidewalk improvement budget approved by the Board of Trustees.

Summer 2009 projects included renovating the sidewalks and west patios of Mitchell Towers and the Cass Street lot. Weather permitting, uneven sidewalk renovations may continue near the Bonta Admissions Center and on other broken panels around campus.

“Campus events can change (renovation) plans,” Frever said.
