Brit Bits: Oct. 10-Oct. 14

 

– Women’s Cross Country –  

Last Week: The Albion women competed in the Great Lakes Region Short and Long Course Championships.  There was a strong finish by Ashley Miracle, Redford first-year, in the 3K race with a time of 12:22.02.  Erika Nichols, Greenville senior, and Amanda Weaver, Marshall first-year,  finished with times of 24:51.37 and 25:16.66, respectively, in the 6K event. 

This Week: The Lady Brits finished ninth out of 13 teams at the Triton Classic in San Diego, led by Nichols and Weaver.  Emily McLaughlin, Grosse Pointe junior, returned to run (what distance?) after an injury kept her out of the competition last weekend, finishing with a time of 26:22.7. 

Key Player: Nichols finished the 6K course with a time of 24:10.4, followed closely by Weaver, who finished about twenty seconds later. 

What’s Next: The Lady Brits will compete in the Multi-Regional Invitational at Oberlin College in Ohio on Saturday, Oct. 17. 
 

– Men’s Cross Country – 

Last Week: The men’s team was led by Deion Pruitt, Ann Arbor first-year, in the 5K race with a first place time of 16:44.62; Matt Melvin, Bangor first-year, with a ninth place finish at 17:06.89; and Carl Wharam, Manchester sophomore, finishing in 11th place with a time of 17:12.18 at the Great Lakes Region Short and Long Course Championships. 

This Week:  The men finished fifth out of nine teams in the 10K course at the Triton Classic in San Diego, finishing with just 37 seconds between the Brits’ first and fifth runners, Pruitt; Nick Shaheen, Flint senior; Melvin; Drew Fuentes, Grand Junction sophomore; and Taylor Polzin, Sturgis sophomore. 

Key Player: The team was led by Pruitt, finishing 21st with a time of 34:47. 

What’s Next:  The men will run in the Multi-Regional Invitational on Saturday Oct. 17 at Oberlin College in Ohio. 
 

 Women’s  Golf – 

Last Week: The Lady Brits finished their season in sixth place at the MIAA Conference Championships held at the Bedford Valley Country Club in Battle Creek.  Though scheduled to be a 36-hole event, rain cut the event down to a one-day 18-hole tournament.  The average team score for the season was 381, eight shots behind Calvin College in the MIAA. 

Key Player:  Erica Mazur, Northville sophomore, and Morgan Reed, Brighton sophomore, finished the season with scores of 93 and 98 respectively.  Mazur was the leading scorer for the Lady Brits for the season with an average score of 87.8. 
 
 

 Men’s Golf – 

Last Week: The Britons won the MIAA jamboree held on Oct 8 at the Medalist Golf Club in Marshall.  The win ties them with Calvin College for second place in the MIAA. 

This Week: Zach Benedict, Manchester junior, and Scott Merritt, Bloomfield Hills sophomore, both finished with scores of 71.  Mark McLaughlin, Monroe senior finished ninth with a 74, and Mark Buckley, Battle Creek senior finished just one stroke behind his teammate with a score of 75. 

Key Player: Benedict and Merritt tied for third in the individual standings. 
 
 

  Varsity Football – 

Record: 1-1 in MIAA play, 1-4 for the season 

Last Week: The men in purple and gold defeated Olivet 20-0 in the opening game of MIAA play at home on Oct. 3.  The game, Albion’s homecoming, was the Brits’ first win of the season. 

This Week: The Britons fell to Hope College with a 14-6 loss at Hope.   

Key Player: Mychal Galla, Muskegon junior, claimed the two field goals for the Britons.  Spencer Krauss, Tipton first-year, had 168 passing yards, with 20 passes caught by Dave Wunderlich, Troy sophomore, and Brian Spencer, East Lansing first-year.  Austin Rogers, Dexter junior, had five tackles and an interception, and Robbie Moffett, Chelsea junior, forced one fumble and led the Britons in tackles. 

What’s Next: The Britons’ MIAA play continues on the road against Adrian College on Oct. 17.
