Snuffed out?
On Monday, Feb. 23, Governor Jennifer Granholm called for doubling the state tax on snuff, cigars and loose tobacco. The tax increase is expected to help balance next year’s state budget.


Making the cut
President Obama vowed to cut the country’s budget deficit in half by 2012. The deficit for 2008 was $1.3 trillion.


Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva tossed free condoms out to the crowds during Carnival parades in Rio de Janeiro. Silva tossed the condoms as part of Brazil’s nationwide campaign to prevent the spread of AIDS.


Jacked up
The ratings for the 2009 Academy Awards were up 6 percent from last year’s Oscars. The 2008 Academy Awards were the lowest rated in history.


CE-Ow! launched “Trillion Dollar Bailout,” an online game that enables players to slap or reward CEOs as well as hand out bags of money to deserving homeowners.

An infant boy in Bhubaneswar, India, was married off to his neighbors’ dog by villagers who say the dog will save the boy from being killed by wild animals. No dowry was exchanged, and the boy will be able to marry a human in the future without filing for divorce.
